Sharon Osbourne

Sharon Osbourne picked up a whole new legion of fans with the reality show about her family, The Osbournes. Inadvertently following her very public battle with cancer, the show was a huge MTV hit. What many people don’t know is that Sharon also happens to be one tough businesswoman, a trait most likely picked up from her father.

On October 9, 1952 in London, Sharon Rachel Levy was born to an Ashkenazi Jewish father, Don Arden, and an Irish Catholic mother, Hope. Don Arden was a British music promoter and manager, and managed talent such as Electric Light Orchestra and Little Richard. Sharon dropped out of school at the age of 15, as she disliked it so much, and worked as a receptionist for her father.

Sharon met Ozzy Osbourne for the first time when she was 17, as her father was managing the group, Black Sabbath. Much later, when Osbourne left the group, Sharon took over his management. She was responsible for recruiting his backup band, The Blizzard of Ozz. With the addition of undiscovered songwriters, Ozzy was a success as solo artist. It was also Sharon that created the annual summer music festival, Ozzfest.

Ozzy wasn’t Sharon’s only client, however. She also managed the group Smashing Pumpkins until she resigned from the position, saying she had to do so for medical reasons, because singer and lead guitarist, Billy Corgan, was making her sick. She also managed Coal Chamber, which was the opening act at one time for the Insane Clown Posse tour. After the ICP dropped Coal Chamber from the tour, it resulted in yet another war of words for Sharon. She and ICP were even placing bets on how well ICP’s next album would do without the help of Coal Chamber on the tour. She also sabotaged the group Iron Maiden at Ozzfest one year in direct retaliation of their words about her reality show.

Sharon and Ozzy married in 1982 and had three children, Aimee, Kelly, and Jack. MTV created a hit reality series around life in the Osbourne household, The Osbournes. All of the members of the family were featured prominently, except Aimee. It allowed for Ozzy’s fans to see a much different side of him, and also brought him many more mainstream fans that perhaps weren’t fans of his music. Shortly after it began airing, Sharon was diagnosed with colon cancer, but she refused to hold up filming, and included it as part of the story.

The cancer spread to Sharon’s lymph nodes, yet she was still able to beat it, despite the fact she was given only a 33% survival rate. She went on to found the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program at Cedars Sinai Hospital and has also supported breast cancer causes. Sharon has had different health issues as well. At one point she underwent gastric bypass surgery to lose 100 pounds, and later admitted that she is a sufferer of bulimia, even to this day.

After a four year run of The Osbournes on MTV, Sharon embarked on a career as a talk show host, but could never seem to get off the ground with this, and the show consequently had trouble booking guests. She also worked as a judge along with Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh on the X Factor, and has published an autobiography, Extreme, that talks about her relationships with both of the important men in her life, Ozzy and her father, along with the important moments in her life.
