Cynthia Nixon Biography

Cynthia Nixon is a multiple Tony and Emmy award-winning stage and screen actress best known for her role as Miranda in Sex and the City.

Cynthia Ellen Nixon was born on April the 9th, 1966, in New York City . Her father, Walter Nixon, was a radio journalist, her mother Anne Nixon, an actress. Intrigued by acting from an early age, she made her TV début at the age of twelve in the ABC special The Seven Wishes of a Rich Kid, and went on to appear in the film Little Darlings with Tatum O'Neal, Armand Assante, and Matt Dillon. Not hesitating to branch out, she went directly to Broadway to star in a revival of Philip Barry's The Philadelphia Story. Winning awards and rave reviews, she continued to perform throughout her teenage years, going on to appear in productions of Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing and David Rabe's Hurlyburly, as well as Milos Forman's acclaimed film, Amadeus, which also starred F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce.

Despite these commitments, Nixon was a successful school student, progressing to Barnard College in New York , where she studied English. While there she starred alongside John Lithgow and Robert Sean Leonard in nuclear thriller The Manhattan Project, as well as taking a major role in Robert Altman's satirical mini-series, Tanner '88. Over the following decade she built up a remarkable body of television work, including appearances in popular shows such as The Equalizer, with Edward Woodward; Law & Order, with Steven Hill; and Murder, She Wrote, with Angela Lansbury. Her movie credits include Addams Family Values ,with Raul Julia, Angelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci; The Pelican Brief, with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington; and Marvin's Room, with Meryl Streep, Robert DeNiro, and Leonardo DiCaprio. On Broadway she appeared in both parts of Tony Kushner's Angels in America and won a Tony award for her work in The Rabbit Hole. Together with Sarah Jessica Parker, Dylan Baker, and Billy Crudup, amongst others, she formed The Drama Dept. acting troupe.

Dspite all this work, Nixon didn't achieve major celebrity status until 1998, when she was cast in the long-running comedy series Sex and the City. Starring alongside her friend Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Kim Cattrall, Nixon became a fan favorite and walked away from the final season with an Emmy. She went on to play Eleanor Roosevelt in Warm Springs, with Kenneth Branagh as Franklin D. Roosevelt in his later days, stricken by polio; and she appeared in Mark Levin's Little Manhattan with Josh Hutcherson and Charlie Ray.

From junior high school until 2003, Nixon was in a relationship with English teacher Danny Mozes. The couple had two children, Samantha Mozes and Charles Ezekiel Mozes, before eventually separating. Nixon is now dating education expert Christine Marinoni, a female campaigner whom she met while attending an education reform meeting.

Nixon has claimed that she has felt no struggle with her sexuality and that she just met a woman and fell In love with her.

She is passionately involved in fundraising to help inner city schools, and also does promotional work for breast cancer charities, since she is a survivor of breast cancer herself, though due to Hollywood prejudice she hesitated to speak out about her condition until two years into her recovery. She remains a Manhattan resident, stressing that her children's uninterrupted schooling there is one of her highest priorities.

In 2008 Cynthia resurrected her character of Miranda Hobbs in the big screen version of Sex and the City, which had concluded as a series on HBO in 2004. Along with Kim Cattrall, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chris Noth and Kristin Davis, Cynthia's troubled life with screen husband Steve, hit the cinemas in late May of 2008 to warm and positive reviews.
